Ultra Fine Aerosols Meteorology and Canopy Penetration in Mosquito Control By Jane S Barber and Mike Greer Contact: Jane S Barber email: jasbarber@knology.net Summary: Volume median diameters of 10-40 µm are typical for aerial applications in mosquito control. This Ultra Fine aerosol is highly susceptible to meteorological change meaning that meteorology now becomes our primary parameter. Appropriate droplet size distributions will shift in the above range depending, in the simplest terms, on meteorology, altitude and aircraft type. To provide assured predictions of the appropriate drop size distribution for any one application, a study is underway which will measure interactions between the four aforementioned parameters. To make the appropriate measures, specialized equipment has been requested, methods and analysis have been developed but the specialized sprayer is still in development. Preliminary studies with a conventional nozzle will be presented to highlight some of the issues this research will eventually resolve.
