Bollworm Flight Response to and Capture by Feeding Attractant-baited Traps

Problem: A feeding attractant (Mix M) for adult bollworms has been developed and patented by the USDA.  Data is needed to evaluate if the attractant may be an effective lure to capture noctuids in traps.
Objective: Evaluate the flight response of bollworms to point sources of Mix M and improve the efficacy of capture by traps.
Approach: Hartstack cone traps and bucket traps will be baited with cotton dental rolls containing Mix M.  Bollworm flight response to the Mix M-baited traps will be recorded with analog and digital video cameras, coupled with red (or IR) lighting and image intensification or with white strobe lighting.  The number and mating status of captured male and female bollworms will be determined.
