Summary:

In Australia, new regulations are mandating certain droplet size specifications for applications of some herbicides.  For example, 2, 4-D must be applied as a Coarse to Very Coarse spray.  Similar regulations are appearing in other countries as well.  The effect of formulation and product characteristics on droplet size has been known for some time, and led to the current research project to measure droplet size for actual pesticide formulations when applied through various nozzles under diverse application conditions.  Droplet size prediction models have been developed to allow applicators to select product type, nozzle and application conditions for assessing compliance with label requirements for droplet size.  The present paper summarizes the University of Queensland wind tunnel studies and droplet size models from this research.
